How the Chinese zodiac works
- Each lunar year is ruled by one of 12 animals, in the order Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.
- The year starts at Lunar New Year (between January 21 and February 20), not on January 1.
- Each year also has one of five elements (metal, water, wood, fire, earth), so the full cycle repeats every 60 years.
Why does my birthday matter, not just the year?
If you were born in January or early February, you may belong to the previous year's animal. For example, someone born on January 20, 2023 is a Tiger, not a Rabbit, because the Year of the Rabbit began on January 22, 2023.
The 2027 sign
2027 is the Year of the Goat (also called the Sheep or Ram), a Fire Goat year starting on February 6, 2027.
